"What is your
writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the
chapters first? "
‘My
writing process.’ I am smiling as I type this, because it sounds pretty
highfalutin, for a first time author like me. I can’t honestly claim to have a
proper modus operandi when it comes
to planning out my books. I’m a bit of a daydreamer by nature, and really, my process
starts with nothing more than…hmm, focused daydreaming, I guess you’d call it.
Thinking about characters, envisioning settings, playing out scenarios in my
head; I did a LOT of that before I really got down to writing Lord and Master, the first book in my Lord
and Master Trilogy.
I
found that I did my most productive thinking either when I was out walking or
sitting in the passenger seat of a car on a long trip, so, not gonna lie, I
clocked up many miles one way or another over the course of three books! Music
helped too, and that shows in the books, which have plentiful references to the
Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana and other bands and performers I love. When it came to
the sex scenes in the books, I made myself a promise early on that I would
include no sexual positions or acts that I hadn’t tried and enjoyed myself, so
I had to do a fair bit of…ahem, research along the way. My husband, as you
might imagine, is extremely supportive of my fledgling writing career ;-)
Maybe
the only hard and fast discipline I put on myself during the actual writing
process was that I made sure to write in a linear way, i.e., I started at the
beginning of the story and carried on to the end, no skipping ahead or writing
the scenes I wanted to write, then filling in the spaces in between. I honestly
think if I hadn’t done it that way, I’d never have finished the books—it’s easy
to write the bits you want to write,
but the real skill lies in how you tie them together.
And
I’d like to think that I was very disciplined when it came to the editing
process. Self-published authors can’t afford to be precious about their work,
so I took advice from my wonderful beta readers, and tried to be tough on
myself. And I hired a totally fantastic copy editor, Antony Hitchin, who polished
the very rough diamond that was my writing and who, if he ever reads this, will
doubtless be finding all kinds of errors and biting his metaphorical tongue!
