Excerpt:

The Light of Day

Francesca de Lorimar felt sometimes that she was cursed, cursed to live in darkness.

Francesca had been born without any pigment in her skin. She was the rarest of human beings, a Gypsy albino, perhaps the palest of pale creatures.

Doomed to live out her life in the absence of the sun, Francesca yearned intensely to feel sunlight's golden rays upon her skin, warming her, enveloping her. But burning, as opposed to warming would occur should she ever indulge her heartfelt wish. The resulting burn would affect her to such a severe degree that Francesca was forced to forego the sun completely.

Her eyes could not stand the light, as much as she adored the brightness, nor could her skin withstand the sunray's touch. Stark, unrelieved sunlight could blind her, rendering her into sightlessness forever should she tempt such a fate.

Too great a risk to undertake, Francesca lamented the loss of the light quietly and only to herself, as she was not one to complain. As she easily admitted to herself, she had never known any differently so it was merely a daydream she mourned, this never to be fulfilled desire for sunlight-day-walking.

Francesca consoled herself with alternate activities, enterprises she could carry out under the assured cover of darkness. She moved into twilight with ease and her favorite days were rainy ones. Life was structured around both Francesca's rather obscure limitations and her vast and unique paranormal abilities.

Francesca was a famous Gypsy medium and a renowned necromancer. She traveled The Corvids extensively conducting séances and raising the spirits of the dead for further conversation with the living. As Francesca had always felt the pull of alternate dimensions and realities, speaking with those who had since passed from the mundane and visible realm was first nature for her.

Francesca was always aware of a certain sort of disconnect within herself in relation to the world around her though. She didn't look like other people, she didn't think like other people and she quite certainly didn't act like other people. For all her outward charm and marked sociability, Francesca was - in secret - much more of a loner by nature than anyone would have guessed.

Her questions ran deep, and the answers she sought, much deeper.

Commencing in childhood, Francesca had been the voice of the departed, often the last resort for troubled souls seeking to make peace with those who had gone before them. Due to the rare expertise Francesca had demonstrated at an early age, it had only taken a very short while for her to become well known throughout The Corvids as a medium.

Once Francesca grew into young womanhood, both her odd beauty and her paranormal abilities flourished even further and her fame grew exponentially.

Many whispered that her unique talents sprang from her albino nature but this was not the case. Although she bore no tangible proof, Francesca knew for certain that her paranormal abilities would have been just as strong had she possessed skin that could withstand the sun. To her knowledge, there was no inherent magic guaranteed to those who had been born albino.

Francesca knew not from where her intense abilities sprang, so she ceased to question the matter at all, and simply absorbed and utilized the knowledge that presented itself to her, full-blown, upon the asking.

Francesca spoke for the dead and they filled her soul to brimming with their memories, regrets, joys, fears and odd humors. The dead spoke to her of sunlight and sunset and daylight and daybreak and Francesca fulfilled her yearnings vicariously through their stories, for during this incarnation, she would not live to see the sun.

Francesca de Lorimar felt sometimes that she was cursed, cursed to live in darkness.
