The end of an Empire. The rise of a Queen.”

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life that is until two mysterious, and dare I say handsome soldiers show up at her apartment doorstep and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Coming from the magical and ravaged world of Kiero, Emory is brought back not realizing that both men are darkly woven in her past. Discovering she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line Emory is thrown into Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne. With both lives clashing Emory uncovers hidden secrets from her past, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows.

Interview with Mallory McCartney

What inspired you to write Black Dawn?

Thanks for having me! Black Dawn was a long time in the making for me. I initially wrote the first manuscript when I was at the end of Grade Eight beginning of Grade Nine. I have always been an avid reader, and lover of all things fantasy. The inspiration of the world at that time took shape by talking with my cousin of how the world would look and the characters. I wrote the initial manuscript for her. After that I didn’t write for seven years. I finished high school and went to college, and travelled Australia and New Zealand after that. It was after I came back home and met and years later married my husband that the idea of Black Dawn came back into conversation. We were walking our dachshunds, and talking about books. I remember this day so clearly, and I said to him, “Did you know I had this idea when I was younger…”

After that we got the old manuscript and that day was the making of the new version of Black Dawn, that we see now.

So, a lot of the inspiration came from the enthusiasm of the wonderful people in my life, (seriously thank you Matt, Jess, and my family!!) But as well from travelling and mythology.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

It was Grade Eight, when I wrote in my yearbook in the future career section that I wanted to become an author. But for me, writing was something I had to leave alone for a long time, and then I revisited it later in life. But it is my passion, and let me tell you, it is super surreal to be here!!

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Thanks to my parents, I was an avid reader from a young age. The first book that I really got hooked onto was Harry Potter. I stole my brothers copy of the Philosophers Stone, and there was no looking back from that day. A close second is Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness series. These books cultivated my obsession with the fantasy genre!

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I’m a bit obsessed with epic fantasy!!! But I also love enjoying a good contemporary novel as well. Overall, I am a YA lover!!! <3

What is your favorite book?

Oh man, this is a tough one!! I am going to slightly cheat and tie three series for this title 😉

1)     Daughter of Smoke and Bone Series by Laini Taylor

2)     Harry Potter series by JK Rowling

3)     Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

I’m going to have to say JK Rowling. Harry Potter, like millions across the world, sparked the inspiration and love for fantasy books in me. I grew up with Harry Potter, and JK Rowling will always be my favorite author.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

This is a tough one as well!! The child in me is saying back to the prehistoric ages so I could see dinosaurs with my own eyes (but let’s be real that would be equally awesome as terrifying) So, having gone to college for the Arts, I would want to travel back to Brussels in 1880, and have the chance to see Vincent Van Gough paint, and have met him. He is by far my favorite artist, and it’s sad that in his lifetime that his artwork wasn’t recognized.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

A little bit of both. There are days where the words flow and writing comes easy and I can get a big chunk of my novel drafted. But in the last year, have I ever learned the challenges of being a writer!!! Dealing with writer’s block, and getting uninspired, and having those hard days are extremely difficult. Writing is something I work at a little every day, and like any trade, you hone and grow your skills over time. If writing is your passion, it’s worth it to overcome those hard days, and breathe life into your story and characters.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

My husband Matt and I own two dachshunds, Link and Lola!!! We adore them, and if you follow me on Instagram, they take up a good portion of my posts 😃

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I really love spaghetti!!! Like a lot. It’s my go to favorite dinner. Also, I love chocolate, and am never picky with the kind of chocolate 😉

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Never give up on your dream!!! If you love writing, and feel in your heart and your gut that your story needs to be put to paper, then do it. No matter what anyone says 😊Think about writing a step at a time, and enjoy the journey!
